I've been doing it since around 2000, with my first program being MUGEN, a 2D fighting game engine that lets you make your own separate characters, stages, add-ons, etc. and you can trade your own creations and collections with other people. Sadly, I never got to program a decent character. :(
While I was using MUGEN, RPG Maker 95 had also intervened with my game-making hobby, and played around with it until around later 2002 that I decided to get RPG Maker 2000, which was friggin' awesome. A few years later, I got into RPG Maker 2003 and it just blew my mind away with any such remaining thoughts I had about RPG Maker 2000 in the past.
Eversince then, I've been using the same program (Rm2k3), despite such recent releases from Enterbrain as RPG Maker XP or the horrid, badly-limited RPG Maker VX, which neither of the two I have much interests in using.
So, tell us about your experiences with the game making world.
